A racer during the Iditarod sled dog race.
Through the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, over mountain ranges, across frozen rivers and isolated tundra, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is the world’s most intense and dangerous competition. 96 teams attempt to traverse over a thousand miles of the most inhospitable terrain, each with just 16 finely tuned dogs to lead the way. The men and women who dare to take on this monumental challenge must work together with man’s best friend, care for each other, and play a disciplined game of strategy if they hope to be first to the finish line in Nome. For some the goal is to win, for others just surviving the race is enough.
This remarkable high definition new series follows seven mushers and their dog teams – both race novices and race legends - as they prepare throughout the year to ready themselves and their athletic team of sled dogs. It’s a life or death race to finish, but the beautiful yet harsh environment and extreme conditions can take its toll on the teams no matter how hard they’ve trained. Dropping out or losing is not an option and would be devastating for any musher who’s put everything, including personal finances, on the line for a chance to compete.
