THAT PARALYMPIC SHOW

Channel 4 · Channel 4 · 27 Aug 2010 · by: Channel 4

That Paralympic Show is a brand new, 10-week magazine series presented by T4's Rick Edwards, wheelchair basketball medallist and broadcaster Ade Adepitan, and roving reporters Olympic 400m runner Iwan Thomas and British Wheelchair Tennis Number One Lucy Shuker.

The show is filmed on location each week from either a Paralympic event or with athletes at their training grounds - where the presenters will be challenged to try out the sports first-hand.

In programme one, Rick tries out wheelchair tennis - with a little help from Ade, Lucy and British Number Two Jordanne Whiley and there is the first instalment of regular feature 'Pimp My Chair' in which trike and paint specialists customise wheelchairs with everything from bling and sat navs to game consoles and speakers. And special guest, Celebrity Big Brother winner Alex Reid has a lesson in dressage from nine-time Paralympic gold medallist Lee Pearson.

That Paralympic Show features guides to the different sports. In programme one, Ade and Iwan are set a 'Goalball' Challenge by Rick. Goalball was invented in Europe in 1946 as sport and rehabilitation for the blind veterans of World War Two. It involves two teams of three taking turns to try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it into their opponents' goal. They must use the sound of the bell to judge the position and movement of the ball. Ade and Iwan have just three months to form two teenage Goalball squads from kids in their local areas - London and Southampton - before the deciding tournament in Bath.

Featuring interviews with sports stars and celebrities and exclusive videos, this series introduces some of our key medal contenders for 2012 - revealing their elite skills, demanding training regimes and the characters behind the competition. One of Britain's best rowers, Sam Scowen allows cameras to follow her punishing training regime and reveals she is on an urgent hunt for a new male rowing partner for her mixed doubles sculls category. It's a race against time as she needs to find a partner with the right credentials and athletic ability to be able to be trained up in time for selection for 2012. To help her in her search, That Paralympic Show will be encouraging viewers to join the 'Sam Needs a Man' search on the Channel 4 Paralympics website.
