Having directed Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II , Ivan Reitman returned to the scary comedy genre with this equally funny take on an alien bug invasion. When trainee fireman Wayne Grey (Seann William Scott) sees a fireball hit a remote part of the desert, Dr Ira Kane (David Duchovny), Prof Harry Phineas Block (Orlando Jones) and Dr Allison Reed (Julianne Moore) form a team to investigate the phenomenon without needing to let the government in on their little secret. They discover that the projectile contains alien life which continually mutates, dies and is re-generated one step up the evolutionary scale. From single cells, they end up facing raptor-like creatures that will soon be able to breathe the atmosphere, and unless they can destroy the "mother" in the core, humanity will be extinct within weeks.
