Eric Newby was part of Britain's first landing in Italy. He was also one of the first to be captured. He is taken to an Italian POW camp where he meets other British captives, and the lovely Wanda - an anti-fascist activist. When Italy surrenders tothe allied forces Newby is released, but an ankle injury keeps him from getting very far. Unwilling to give up their southern stronghold the Nazis move in and make life worse than ever for the locals. Before the end of the war Newby must make a painful sacrifice for the woman he loves.
